Destry Brown Named 2025 Outstanding Alumnus

Fort Scott Community College is proud to announce the 2025 Outstanding Alumni, Destry Brown.  Brown grew up in Bourbon County and attended Fulton and Fort Scott schools from kindergarten through graduation from high school in 1980.  Brown attended FSCC and graduated in 1982 with an Associate of Arts degree. He played basketball while attending school at FSCC. He became an assistant basketball coach and later became the head girls basketball at FSCC while finishing his degree at PSU.  He earned his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1984 and later his Master of Science in Administration in 1995.

Destry taught elementary school in Mound City, KS for 11 years prior to becoming an administrator. He has acquired over 40 years of experience in public schools as a teacher and administrator.  He has spent decades serving in and leading districts across Kansas and Missouri. His accolades include the Kansas Department of Education Sallie Mae Beginning Teacher Award (1985), the Distinguished Service Award from Kansas School Superintendent Assoc (2018), Finalist for Kansas Superintendent of the Year (2012), Pittsburg Business and Education Alliance Volunteer of the Year (2015), the Distinguished Citizenship Award in Clinton, MO (2021) and Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year (2023).

Since 2022, Brown has served as the Superintendent of USD 234 School District.  He values his relationships with the students, teachers and community members more than anything.  Brown loves to cook, travel, and enjoys quality time with his family.  He also loves history and has an impressive collection of historic portraits of US Presidents.

There will be a reception to honor Destry Brown as this year's Outstanding Alumni on May 16 at 10:30am in the Ellis Fine Arts Building.
